Soooo r/p question

Member Blog post · Lifestyle

Do I have to shelve/retire my character if I want to play a different one?  Let’s say I still want to be Iskander but instead of going around as the Tuchuck I’m known as, I want to be a mysterious person roaming the streets/cities. If I put all of it in my profile, would that be kosher? Or is that still wrong?

Yes you would, because that would be considered dualling. You can't have 2 characters in Gor at the same time. And for those of us who observe the rules of roleplay, once that character is shelved or retired, it's gone for good and can never be used again.

Are You gonna be an Assassin? Are You going to be doing some under cover investigating? If so, an alias is acceptable, is it not? After all, when that fella in the books became that assassin dude, no one called "cheat". Respectfully putting in two coppers. Peace.

I don’t know what I am going to do to be honest with him was sort of exploring my options.

As for shelving how is one accepted and then comes back as said character and allowed (looking towards Kyrielle as an example)

As for the books there are plenty of references,Tarl becoming Bosk but in some cases referred to Tarl, Marlenus in Assassins

Truly I’m not trying to play 2 characters just expand on a character and explore further around if that makes sense. I will always b Iskander(1/2)

Until I die or I quit for good

I have been told that you can't bring back a shelved character or a retired character. If you want to be in disguise or whatever then you put who you really are on your profile when you make your new description. There's so much apathy here now you could probably dual and only a few diehards would say anything derogatory about it.

Wait....so I stated in my profile a week ago stepping back and shelved my character this then means I retired? Ermmmm not exactly what I was referring to. I was taking a breather to get grip on life. Sooooo..... in case it was misunderstood. I didnt retire. I took a break to breathe not leave. As for you Isklander why not just be Tuchuk gone wild? Or left your camp to see the world by lurking in shadows and mysterious kinda guy. I find it boring to sit in a quiet room all the time. Mingle!!!

People might recognize you if they know you. People like myself would not as we havent met. Go in disguise. Role play your heart out. Be creative. It is why we are here. Least for me that is what it is. To act with words or writing a chapter in the book! I love the differences that Gor brings.

Sana when I think of shelving I think of it as putting them away, not retiring, then using another character, I may be wrong in my definitions though

I’m not active in role play due to no computer so I don’t consider myself retired I know many have took breaks due to rl and came back to continue onward. Best of luck on what ever you decide

Stepping away and not saying anything is fine. Stepping away and saying “shelving” or “retired or retiring” is where problems come up. I took a 2 year break. I just didn’t come here or GCN which is where we were at the time. No worries there. It’s all in how you do or do not word it. Not knowing the rules isn’t an excuse.

Thiery makes some great points, especially with what we should be trying to avoid: Apathy and Dualling. When we created the rules of roleplay, "shelving" was just that, putting your character "on the shelf", IE: retiring. That's why we specifically put in that "shelving" was the same as retiring, meaning you're putting your character away.

Bâsħîr¤PĦ¥¤ÇPؤÀdmSep 13, 2018 10:30 PM

Iskander mentions the dishonored character Kyrielle, who retired that one to become Noor (and a string of others) several years ago, and then went on to play Manon in both Gor and Roman roleplay (Dualling), and now she's back in the original form. If you choose to "allow" that, that's your choice, but her previous actions brought dishonor upon herself and her "companion". That is precisely why Gorean roleplay is in the state it's in, because of Apathy.

That is why I asked before I acted. I want to do the right thing, the right way so I figured I would ask. That being said I may just do the time

HaiganXSep 14, 2018 10:01 AM

The obvious answer is also the simplest, use an NPC to rp as the mysterious character. Skulk about all you like but certain actions such as killings or captures aren't going to be valid.

JudasWSep 14, 2018 10:50 AM

"Shelving": The act of shelving is defined as bringing back an already dead/retired character. Once a character is retired it may not be resurrected again, it is for all intents and purposes gone. ** Thats a line from the agreed RP rules that were voted on by Leaders years ago.

So if You want to create a New Char and try some thing different the "Old" You is gone

I am Judas

another thing that popped up yesterday while discussing this issue, was that back in the day, in the 00's a "Man" by the name of Theron attempted to kill Iskander in a Safe Zone, CrossWindsKeep. the warriors of the home deemed it necessary to raise the room to a sanctioned, and he attacked. now I really dont know the whole rules about zones, but is that okay? to out of the blue change them? another point they were saying the keep is safe, not outside its walls, where I was at the time. no logs

HaiganXSep 16, 2018 2:34 PM

In My humble opinion, there are no damned "Zones" in Gor when men, other than Physicians who by Caste avoid the practice of combat, are present to defend their Home Stone. Any man worth his balls isn't going to attack a room full of defenseless women be they Free or slave, much less would a man of that Home Stone allow it to happen without answering the call of duty to defend them. Both are the acts of a coward, that being said, if a man is hiding in a "safe zone" then he's a pussy, not a Gorean

Bâsħîr¤PĦ¥¤ÇPؤÀdmSep 16, 2018 5:22 PM

Concur with Haigan. Changing your settings during role play is pussified. If you want to escalate something, then create another room with the proper settings and have at it there.

ThieryWSep 16, 2018 6:08 PM

Theron couldn’t fight for shit anyway. He was a joke.

Sana, the bit about shelving a character refers to a habit people used to have where they would "shelve" a character, do at least two weeks away, then come back as a new character, and after that second character ran its course they would then do another two weeks away and "bring back" the shelved character(read: contingency plan). If you're just taking a break in general then that isn't really shelving.
